New Paper in Nature Biomedical Engineering

Alex DeGrave is first-author, and Joe Janizek is a co-author, on a new paper in Nature Biomedical Engineering reporting their new artificial intelligence system for diagnosing melanoma. Both are MSTP students in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, working under the supervision of Dr. Su-In Lee. Alex and Joe found that AI learns to use many of the same characteristics, such as pigmentation patterns, trusted by dermatologists—and just like its human counterparts, sometimes exhibits faulty reasoning by relying on medically irrelevant characteristics.
