Encode Project Contributors

Two MSTP alumni, Brad Bernstein (entered ’92, graduated ‘99) and Michael Bender (entered ’82, graduated ’90) were contributors to the ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) project, published in the September issue of Nature. Dr. Brad Bernstein (entered ’92, graduated ‘99) is quoted in the New York Times that the ENCODE project will “drive science forward.”

Dr. Bernstein is Associate Professor of Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and Associate Member at the Broad Institute. He is also affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Systems Biology and Center for Cancer Research, and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Dr. Bender is attending physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital and director of Odessa Brown Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic, as well as an associate professor in the department of Medicine, Division of Hematology. He also runs a research lab at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
