Admissions Overview
Who applies to the University of Washington MSTP?
We hope to enroll students in our MSTP who have a love for medicine and for science that will enable them to thrive in roughly 8 years of immersion in both. We search for students who bring outside-the-box thinking, generosity of spirit, and an awesome work ethic to these 8 years.
These qualities may well describe you more than you realize. Please read on:
In our experience, students who most enjoy and are most successful in our MSTP and thereafter are those with prior breadth and depth of research experience, clinical exposure, and community service.
The most meaningful research experiences are generally those of more than a year, in the same lab if possible, leading to new data that answers a question. The process of taking a project from beginning to end, of experiencing experimental success and failure, and of putting results into a coherent story for eventual publication, provide a very good sense of whether a life in science is the right one.
Similarly, prior meaningful experiences with patients and in one’s community provide a very good sense of whether a life in medicine is the right one.
In your essays, please tell us these experiences. We want you to flourish in both science and medicine and to serve as a bridge between the two.
We look forward to your application.
